Update: On July 1, Governor Eric Holcomb announced the launch of a statewide effort to encourage Hoosiers to wear masks when in public places as part of the state’s continued effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the community. The effort, dubbed “Mask-Up Hoosiers”, encourages local communities to join with the state to encourage the use of masks.

Resources for website and social media are available for businesses and organizations interested in joining this effort. These resources are available to use free of charge from the State of Indiana.

The Centers for Disease Control continues to strongly recommend wearing masks in public settings, especially where social-distancing measures are difficult or impossible to maintain. As businesses and public places begin to transition to the “next normal”, congregating in many of these places makes physical distancing – staying six feet apart – more difficult. This is where a mask comes in handy.

COVID-19 spreads mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Studies and evidence on infection control report that these droplets usually travel around 6 feet (about two arms lengths).

So, why should you and your family wear a mask in public? Here are a few great reasons to consider some temporary discomfort:

  • A Mask is Your Superhero Shield! While studies show a cloth mask won’t necessarily protect you from COVID-19 particles in the air, it will provide some barrier versus not wearing a mask.  Why not use your “portable shield” whenever you can?
  • Masks Protect You and Those Around You! Your inner superhero can appreciate the power of protecting innocent citizens from danger, and wearing a mask is certainly a step in that direction. Wearing a mask will not only serve as a barrier against COVID-19 particles from others, but it will keep you from spreading the virus if you have it but are not showing symptoms.
  • Masks are the New Superhero Cape! Ok, maybe it’s a bit of an exaggeration, but why not flex your fashion muscles and choose a mask that expresses your personality? Not only are you being a responsible citizen and protecting vulnerable persons, you’re doing it with style.

Be part of the solution in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing your mask when in public while practicing proper health practices and social distancing.  With your help, we can continue to flatten the curve.
